It was a good question. One that Gabriel had been asking himself since noon. When he took off those glasses, well… with a good haircut and… some cooler clothes, Owen could be pretty hot. But he was a strange dude. The way he looked at him sometimes made Gabriel feel a bit weird… and Owen was nerdy as hell. Oh well, still it looked like he'd be spending more time with Owen than he anticipated.
"He's going to help us," Gabriel said, looking at his dad. "He's got it, like us… and this connection with Dennis could give us a heads-up as to what the demon's are up to."
"Maybe he should come along with us tonight then." Terrance laid his head back and closed his eyes.
"Come along with us where?" Gabriel asked.
"We need to pick Antoine's ex up in Manhattan," he informed him. "She's afraid to come here alone. Maybe Owen would be of some use too."
"I can call him," Gabriel offered, digging his cell phone out of his pocket. Immediately, it began to vibrate.
He glanced at his phone and read the text message. It was from Owen, and he'd written I'll be there.
A little while later, his father pulled Alex's car out of the driveway and they headed downtown. They'd convinced Alex to stay home this time. Terrance told him if he was worried about him, it would distract him, and he needed to be focused.
Alex seemed to accept that but he looked a little disappointed when they left.
Gabriel stared in wonder at the text message he'd received from Owen earlier. "How do you think he does that?"
"How does who do what?" his father asked, sounding distracted.
"Owen, just connect to me like that?"
"Don't know. Perhaps it was Dennis who… connected you."
"Well, he did. I mean, he contacted Owen, told him I'd be at that school. He's looking out for me."
"He loves you, obviously." His father reached over and squeezed his shoulder.
"Ever wonder if Alex really loves you?"
His father gave him a quick look. "No."
"I mean maybe he's being controlled by a demon and—"
"Gabriel!"
"It happened to me."
"I know and I'm sorry. I really am. It wasn't fair."
"Then how do we know? Who do we trust? Do I look at everyone with suspicion now, trust no one?" The pain felt so fresh again.
His father sighed. "Everyone operates on trust to some extent, son. Everyone gets burned."
"What would you do if Alex wasn't what he seemed? What would happen if one day he looked at you and didn't see you anymore, forgot about you being lovers? What would you do, Dad?"
There was silence for a few seconds as Terrance stopped at a stop sign. Then his father said, "I'd just die."
Gabriel swallowed. "It's what I felt like doing today when I saw Colt. He looked at me like I'd lost my mind. I just wanted to hold him and he just wanted to get away. Owen says he's not even gay."
"How does Owen know that?"
"I don't know. That's what he said.
